The Apple Newton family of handheld computers kicked off the handheld revolution -- sadly for Apple, the Newton came to the market a few years too soon. The Newton's capabilities were amazing for 1993 -- the devices are still competetive with the PDAs sold today. The first Newton Messagepads released had one flaw: the handwriting recognition was not accurate enough to make the device usable. This flaw was eventually fixed, but the original bad press stunted adoption of the device. Apple discontinued the Newton series of PDAs in 1998, during the streamlining of their product lines.

The Einstein emulator is a part of The Einstein Project, a project designed to eventually support the advanced Newton feature set on modern PDA hardware. The emulator is still in its early stages, but it already includes all features except the following:
- PCMCIA card support
- Serial ports (including the keyboard)
- Sound input
- Better sound output (and the volume)
- JIT optimization (currently uses Threaded Emulation)
- The RealTimeClock alarm (the emulator will not wake up at 3am)
- Better battery support
- Better support for hardware addresses (such as the power subsystem)
