The Sega Mega Drive, known as Sega Genesis in America, was the first true 16-bit console system and gained widespread popularity. It competed directly against the Super Nintendo. Sega's final incarnation of the Mega Drive was known as the Genesis Nomad, a portable unit which could run on batteries.

Generator/MacOS is a solid Genesis emulator for the Macintosh. It features full sound and music, MP acceleration, InputSprocket, and a huge number of different video modes. It also includes a PowerPC Assembly Z80 core and saved states.

DGen is somewhat faster than Generator/MacOS, but suffers from a problem that causes the music to play too slowly in a lot of games. It does, however, run a number of games that Generator does not. It is also open source, allowing anyone to improve it.

GenEm PPC is a port of GenEm to the Macintosh. Sound was not ported, but other than that, GenEm PPC was a very well-designed emulator. Unfortunately, Brian Verre has stopped developing this program.
