April 1999
MacMAME has been updated to version 0.35b11! As usual, this version supports several new ROMs and cleans up some minor bugs.
Some useful add-ons for Blue Label have been released; a Control Strip launcher lets you open up Blue Label with just one click, and a HD Mounter contextual menu item lets you open up a hard drive image on the desktop without extra hassle. Although these are rather minor features, it's worth a look.
Richard Bannister strikes again! After a hiatus of several months, he has returned to the emulator scene with two brand new emulator ports, and three emulator updates as well! A preview version of Arnold/MacOS has been released; this is a new Amstrad CPC emulator which offers precise emulation at the expense of speed. Hu6280/MacOS is a port of a popular TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine emulator; unfortunately, the Mac port does not support sound yet. Generator/MacOS, a Genesis emulator, has been brought to version 0.0.3 which fixes several bugs in the interface. Handy, an Atari Lynx emulator, has been updated to version 0.5.3. Finally, Oric/MacOS has also been updated to version 1.5.
The last week has been rather dull in the world of emulation. Sorry for the lack of updates but there really wasn't much to post.
Due to an unfortunate court decision, shipments of Connectix Virtual Game Station have been temporarily stopped. However, most retail stores should have ample stock for the time being, so this will hopefully not be a problem.
TRS-80 has received a minor update. This version is Mac OS 8.5 aware.
Hopefully, MacMAME 0.35b11 should be available in the next few days.
Virtual PC has been updated to version 2.1.3! This is a minor update which only affects PowerBook users; it allows the PowerBook's left floppy disk bay to work as an emulated floppy disk drive.
MacMAME has been updated to version 0.35b10! This version supports several new games, and also allows 3D cards to be used to smooth the emulated graphics, much like RAVE Mode in SNES9X. Unfortunately this feature is still somewhat glitchy for some users.
It turns out that escapade, covered in the previous update, was indeed just an April Fool's joke. Well, it was a cute idea nonetheless.
The FrontEnd link below has been corrected. (You may need to hold option while clicking this link.)
Blue Label has received Update 3! Finally, the program seems to be stable on my computer. This update fixes problems with Windows 98 installation, Windows 3.1, Error Type 10 crashes on quit, and several more issues.
Two new emulator front ends have recently been released! The first, appropriately named FrontEnd, is a freeware product; it supports ROM comments, screenshots, and most popular game emulators. The second, N2, provides a slightly spiffier interface, but supports fewer emulators and has shareware restrictions.
Strange but true: Apparently a PalmPilot emulator, escapade, has been developed for the Apple Newton! Unfortunately, the only article I could find about escapade was in German--you can use Babelfish to translate it, but don't expect miracles. (The publication date makes me a little suspicious, though--do they have April Fools Day in Germany?)
Hope everyone got a good laugh out of the UltraHLE April Fool's joke! (There is no port of UltraHLE for the Macintosh, and almost certainly, there never will be one.)
MacCentral has posted some more information on the promised Macintosh port of Bleem!
The awesome EMU News World web site was closed down by its author. This excellent resource will be missed by all emulator fans.
Also, Dave's Classics was closed down for several days, due to legal issues which they are not allowed to discuss. Thankfully, the page is back online, but all file downloads are unavailable until these issues are resolved.
MacMAME has been updated to version 0.35b9!
A German web site compares Virtual PC to Blue Label; it seems that Blue Label is almost four times slower than Virtual PC at running WinBench 97, a rather accurate test of performance.
