December 1998

Merry Christmas!

True Reality has been updated! This version runs faster than before, although it still cannot run anything more than home-brew demo carts.

NEShots, a multi-emulator front end, has been updated to version 0.3. (The link has been fixed.)

The Intellivision Lives CD-ROM is finally available! This CD-ROM collection contains 75 classic Intellivision games, fully emulated.

Gamecenter.com ran an interesting article about emulation called Forbidden Fruit.

MacMAME has been updated to version 0.34rc2! This version fixes a few bugs.

NoSTalgia has been updated to version 0.6. It features more-accurate emulation, and support for Appearance Manager and Navigation Services.

Users who downloaded SNES9X 1.1.6 last night were receiving the previous version by mistake. This has been fixed; you should re-download the software if you downloaded it this morning or last night.

The Nintendo page now has a long-overdue link to NESBase, a compatibility listing of ROMs on various emulators.

SNES9X has been updated to version 1.1.6! This version removes the need for the "SPC700 Timing" option and fixes several ROMs which didn't work before.

All of Richard Bannister's various ROM Info packs have been updated to version 1.0. You can also download the full bundle all at once.

Bernie ][ the Rescue has reached version 2.0! This upgrade makes Bernie, already the best Apple IIgs emulator, even better. Version 2.0 final offers much faster video emulation, smoothed high-resolution video, and improved speed control. All these updates make Bernie run over twenty times faster than a stock Apple IIgs on a Power Macintosh G3!

MacMAME has been updated to version 0.34rc1! This version fixes a few minor bugs, and adds some nice features like the ability to analyze the currently installed ROM sets. (Note that macmame.org is once again down, due to a server problem.)

Power20, an excellent VIC-20 emulator, has been updated to version 1.1.1!

Catakig, a great Apple II emulator, has been updated to version 1.10! This version is up to 20% faster, and corrects several bugs.

The PSMac project has recently seen some progress; it seems that the processor core is now close to finished. Unfortunately, it's still a long ways from playing games--there is still no way to load a game, and no emulation of graphics or sound hardware.

SNES ROM Info has been updated to version 1.0b5! This version is now being maintained by Richard Bannister, and is now shareware.

The author of NES ROM Info warns that the current version can occasionally compress the same ROM twice in a row, causing iNES to report it as a corrupted file. If this happens to you, drag the non-working ROM onto Easy-GZ to fix it.

iNES, a Nintendo emulator, has been updated to version 0.7.2 Plus! This new version has improved sound in some games, and now supports NetPlay! (Note: a LAN is highly recommended; NetPlay over the Internet is very, very slow.)

Power64, a Commodore 64 emulator, has been updated to version 2.2!

A working version of the Stream Player for Playstation has been posted on the PSEmu site. This utility will allow you to view Playstation movie files on your Macintosh; unfortunately, you can only copy the file from CD with a utility for PCs.

SNES9X has been updated to version 1.1.5! This version has improved sound, better SuperFX/DSP support, and several bug fixes; many games that have been glitchy since version 0.9.5 (such as Donkey Kong Country and Metroid 3) have finally been fixed. The updated source code has been released as well.

Marat Fayzullin has announced that a new version of iNES should be coming soon! Expect this coming version to include DiskSystem support, VS. System game support, many fewer graphic glitches, even more mappers, and direct-to-MIDI sound recording! (Please don't write me for details; unfortunately, I don't have much more information about this update.)

A front-end for several emulators, NEShots, has been released! This lets you see preview screenshots of games before opening them.

The PSEmu Home Page reports that a Mac OS port of PSEmu is underway! Apparently, they hope to make it available sometime next year. (Note: they also released a Playstation movie viewer, but unfortunately the archive appears to be corrupted.)

A link to a well-designed site dedicated to Rebirth Mods has been added.

SNES9X 1.1.5 is coming soon! This version features bug-fixes to Mario Kart, improved sound generation and support for Tales of Phantasia!

MacV9T9 has been updated to version 0.0a8! Sound is now supported.

A new emulator for VAX, eVAX, has been released! Source code is included with this emulator as well.

MacMAME has been updated to version 0.34b8! This update fixes several problems with Neo-Geo emulation, and has stereo sound! Also, this release can emulate over 1,000 games!

NetSprocket 1.1.1 been released! This update has the potential to improve NetPlay with SNES9X.

SMS/GG ROM Info and PCE ROM Info have been updated.

Power PC Engine has been updated to version 0.3.8.

The next version of MacMAME, 0.34b8, should be completed in a few days--currently, the Macintosh sound drivers are being rewritten to support stereo output. This version will be a godsend for Neo-Geo gamers; the sound is almost perfect, and almost all complications and weirdness with Neo-Geo ROMs has been fixed. (The remaining problems are usually related to bad ROM dumps.)

The Swedish version of SNES9X 1.1.2 has been released.
