April 2000
Connectix Virtual Game Station has finally been updated to version 1.4! This update fixes many critical problems, including crashing problems encountered by Macs with DVD drives. It also updates the emulation core to improve compatibility across the board! But most importantly, it has been rumored that this version removes all of the territorial lockouts! I have been unable to test this myself, so if you have any experience with this, please let me know!
Connectix Virtual PC has been updated to version 3.03a! This version provided much-improved stability for many users.
MacMAME has been updated to version 0.37b1.
MESS has been updated to version 0.36 final.
X68000 Emulator PPC has been updated to version 0.0a6! Apparently, this version is able to run Gradius to some degree.
The Macintosh PDP-8/E Simulator has been updated to version 1.3 final.
MacSpectacle has been updated to version 1.9.7.
MTXEmu has been updated to version 1.0b3.
The MacMAME News and Info page currently has interesting interviews with each major MacMAME team member.
Two CHIP-8 emulators have recently become available: MacVision-8 and Crazy-8. However, because the CHIP-8 was not an actual computer, emulation.net will not maintain a page dedicated to the CHIP-8. (The CHIP-8 was much like Java--programs based on the CHIP-8 could be executed on many different platforms, but there was no native CHIP-8 hardware.)
I must apologize once again for lack of frequent updates. Unfortunately, for the foreseeable future, I am probably not going to have enough free time to update the site more than two or three times a month. Please bear with me; even though there may not be daily news updates, I will continue to do my best to ensure that the content of emulation.net is always fresh and current.
A new Atari 800 emulator with an unimaginative name, Atari 800, has been released for the Mac! Although it requires a pretty fast Mac, this emulator seems to be pretty solid, with good compatibility. Unfortunately, this early release is currently lacking sound support.
An emulator for the X68000 series, X68000 Emulator PPC, has been released! Unfortunately, nobody seems to have the necessary ROMs to make the emulator start up. Please contact me if you have gotten this emulator to work!
Generator, a Sega Genesis emulator, has been updated to version 0.13! This is primarily a bug-fix update, but frameskipping is now supported as well.
MacMAME has been updated to version 0.36a! Final versions are much more stable and polished than the usual beta releases, so if you plan on using MacMAME often, you should definitely download this important update.
GeoMAME, a Neo-Geo emulator based on MacMAME, has also been updated to version 0.36 final. This version features all the enhancements and fixes of MacMAME 0.36 final.
A new MAME spinoff, MacPacMAME, has been released! MacPacMAME actually supports every single Pac-Man variant currently known to exist (which is actually over a hundred separate titles).
MESS has been updated to version 0.36b16. This version fixes several compatibility and stability issues.
Palm OS Emulator has been updated to version 3.0a5! This version supports Palm IIIc, for color Palm OS emulation.
Catakig, an excellent Apple II emulator, has been updated to version 1.16.
MacUAE-GUI is a new front-end utility for configuring MacUAE.
A new Mac-related emulation site, MacEmuScene, has recently been opened. Their focus is on frequent news updates and fresh content, and their page is certainly worth a visit for the Mac emulation enthusiast! (Note, however, that some of their more recent headlines are just April Fool's pranks.)
MacMilitia has recently posted a very positive review of Virtual PC 3.0!
Dan Vanderkam has posted a great article online which takes a look at vMac and System 1.0. The Mac OS has definitely come a long way in 16 years.
Many people have asked me when Connectix's promised Virtual Game Station 1.3 will be released. Unfortuntely, I haven't heard anything about it since the Sony injunction was lifted, and Connectix refuses to release any more information. Sorry.
On April 1st, Richard Bannister and Gil Pedersen announced a new emulator for Nintendo's Virtual Boy, called ViBE. Since the emulator cannot be downloaded yet, some have speculated that it's just an elaborate April Fool's hoax.
