January 2000

The search feature of emulation.net has been broken for a while, apparently, but it's now fixed and working better than ever. As always, thanks to Hotbot for making the search feature possible.

Magic Engine has been updated to version 0.96 Final! This version features sound and many other improvements.

Palm OS Emulator has been updated to version 3.0a4.

Generator, a Sega Genesis emulator, has been updated to version 0.11a! This updated version now supports full music and sound effects!

Frodo, a Commodore 64 emulator, has received a minor update to version 4.1.9.

MacMAME has been updated to version 0.36b15! As usual, the update comprises additions of several new games along with various bug fixes. A utility for checking your MAME ROMs, CleanAnalysis, has been updated as well.

MacMESS, a multi-console emulator, has been updated to version 0.36b15. This version continues to be rather unstable in general, but sports a pretty amazing repertoire of hardware that can be emulated.

If you're into Amiga emulation, Amiga in a Box is a great archive of Amiga software, prepackaged and ready to use with MacUAE!

EmuMac has posted an interesting interview with Gerrit Goossen, who developed Mac1964.

Richard Bannister's ROM Info pack has been updated to version 1.4.

SoftVMS, the VMS emulator, has been updated to version 1.8.

Shameless plug: Skittles 2 has been updated to version 2.0.2! If you haven't tried the game yet, please give it a shot!

An update to SoftWindows 95, for Mac OS 9 compatibility, is now available.

Bernie ][ the Rescue, an unparalleled Apple IIgs emulator, has been updated to version 2.6! This version includes CataDog--a ProDOS disk cataloging feature that provides an intuitive, Finder-like interface. It even allows for Mac OS aliases that point to IIgs software!

Deja ][, a little-known Apple II emulator which was designed around using the Apple II's AppleWorks software, has been renamed to "OpenPhoenix" and is now open source! Open-source software will always be a great tool for budding emulator authors to use of learning purposes. It's also a solid emulator if you're at all interested in AppleWorks.

Mac1964 has been updated to version 0.4.1! Some truly astounding progress has been made--for example, on a G4, Super Mario 64 runs at an unprecedented 20-30 frames per second! While this is still not quite as impressive as some of the best N64 emulators on the PC, and sound support is still lacking, it is arguably the first time that playable N64 emulation has been available on the Macintosh.

Magic Engine has been updated! The new version features InputSprocket support and several bug fixes.

freeMSX has been updated to version 1.0 final.

MacSpectacle, a ZX Spectrum emulator, has been updated to version 1.9.4!

An emulator for the Dreamcast's VMS, SoftVMS, has been released! This is not an emulator for the Sega Dreamcast! The VMS is the handheld memory card that plugs into the Dreamcast controller. This emulator is still interesting, though, because the VMS also behaves like a miniature Gameboy.

Happy New Year!

A controversial new emulator always seems to follow the new year, and this year marks the unveiling of Magic Engine! It is the first TurboGrafx/PC Engine emulator to support CD-based games. It also seems relatively fast, and has excellent compatibility. Unfortunately, it is still in beta, so many features are still unfinished--most notably, sound and InputSprocket support are still absent, and many users report problems with the CD-ROM support. Also, the interface is incredibly DOS-like (for example, ROMs are required to have a "PCE" extension to be recognized at all). Hopefully, these issues will be resolved soon.

DGen, a Genesis emulator, has been updated to version 1.1.7! This version increases stability significantly, and now features RAVE mode!

NoSTalgia, an Atari ST emulator, has been updated to version 0.62!

Several online retailers have lowered prices on Virtual Game Station dramatically! For example, at the time of this post, MacConnection's price was $16.95, and ValueAmerica was $15.83. (However, keep in mind that more than one user has reported problems with Virtual Game Station and Mac OS 9--in particular, multiple-disc games seem to cause hard lockups.)

MacMAME has been updated to version 0.36b12! This version is a fairly significant update--the video architecture has been redesigned mostly from scratch, due to changes in the PC version. Unfortunately, the 3D video modes are still being worked on, and so they have been disabled from this version. Of course, support for a handful of new games has also been added.

An emulator for the first computer with programs stored in memory, the "Small-Scale Experimental Machine" (codenamed "Baby"), has been released.

There is an interesting teaser on the Mac1964 home page: "Check back January 1, 2000. You won't be disappointed."

I cannot find working links for these emulators: iGS, Space Invaders, Vectorama, CP/M Emulator and MacVAX. If you have any information in this regard, please let me know.
